Most of those that have survived are of the one-aisled basilica type with blue or white dome, while others are cruciform in shape.Santorini's monasteries are massive, often reminiscent of fortresses, such as the monastery of Profitis Ilias which can be visited on our guided coach excursion.
Each church has a patron saint & many hold a celebration on that day, which often means that apart from the church service, there is food and wine, and sometimes music and dancing.

Beaches in Santorini: Typical characteristics are long stretches of black sand and small black pebbles due to the volcanic nature of the island. Some have red or white sand with pebbles.
Many beaches are organized with sunbeds, umbrellas & water sports, although one can still find remoter and still-unspoiled places to go.
Famous beaches are Perissa beach, Perivolos beach, Kamari beach, Red beach, Koloumbo and Pori beach.
